About Us
The TurningByrd
I am Keith, the Founder and Artist of The TurningByrd Pen Studio! I've been an excited woodworker since my high school days when I took every shop class I could find! I have always enjoyed valuable time in my shop on wood working projects. Several years ago I was gifted a beautiful set of antique lathe tools, from one of the woodworkers at Universal Studios. Many of these which were made in a factory in Massachusetts prior to 1854. These tools inspired me to branch out and learn various "woodturning" techniques on many types of materials.
In 2010, my son talked me into making a pen for him from a piece of family story wood. I did and was hooked. The idea for the The TurningByrd Pen Studio was born and I have been steadily making pens ever since!
Sourcing materials
I enjoy sourcing unique materials from around the world, and discovering the nuances of each piece as I craft it into a precision writing instrument. There is a thrill in creating something custom and unique, with such practical value. I find great pleasure in making these pieces, and will happily use materials from you to craft your writing instrument. I have somewhere around 100 types of wood and cast my own resin pen blanks. I also use several types of antler and horn from many exotic animals such as Whitetail deer, Axis deer, Red Stag, Musk Ox, Dall Sheep, moose, elk and even an ivory Hippopotamus tooth!
I really enjoy creating pens from materials that you provide and that have meaning to you. I have made pens from a family barn, the old school house, grandma's stairs, the tree in the back yard, grandpa's old tool handle and on and on!
